Tax fine from the tax amnesty program has reached IDR 56.1 trillion or by 56% from target of IDR 165 trillion. Assets reported by taxpayers is reaching IDR 2.000 trillion, repatriation fund is reaching IDR 100 trillion, and taxpayers are increasing by 2.6 million people. The program improves well although it has not yet reached the target. What could we learn from this successful program?
A previous article has discussed tax amnesty history from other countries. One of the biggest challenges is giving a signal that this kind of program will not be repeated in the future, or otherwise the tax compliance will be lesser, the apathy will be higher.
This challenge has been exceed by a factor, that is trust. The people trusts Jokowi as the administrator, accompanied by Sri Mulyani the new Minister of Finance. The trust has been shown not only from their assertiveness, but also from their positive responses of how he deals with challenges and people’s needs.
Another factor of success is intensive communication and information during the first period. It makes it easier for all those who support the program. The differences are obvious if compared to other program that has the same purpose: Sunset Policy, which only directed for a certain people so it was not quite optimal.
