BRI Is Not Ready to Operate Satellite

PT Bank Rakyat Indonesia tbk (BBRI) will need an estimate of two years to be ready to become a manager of a satellite given its current state. BRI must also prepare Rp 70 billion to Rp 90 billion per year to operate the satellite.

Heru Sutadi, a Telecommunications observer, said that PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia Tbk (TLKM) and Ooredo PT Indosat Tbk (ISAT) first took about two years to train engineers to operate the satellite. “It will take time for BRI because only a few people are reliable enough to operate satellites. The issue is not in operating the satellites in normal conditions, but when there is a space junk encounter, declining power from the solar panels, and other problems,” said Heru. So the challenge for BRI would appear after the BRIsat orbits. BRI also has not had a complete roadmap to build, launch, manage, operationalize and maintain the satellite.

Heru estimated that about 14% -18% of the cost of the satellite lease will be needed for the satellites’ operation and maintenance. If the rental fee is Rp 500 billion in the calculation of the BBRI management, then the maintenance cost would range from about Rp 70 billion to Rp 90 billion per year. As is known, BRIsat has been launched by the Ariane 5 rocket belonging to Arianespace from the Guiana on Saturday (18/6) at 18.39 local time on Sunday (19/6) at 4:39 pm. (*)
